First Sg Tahan Kelah

My first Sg Tahan KelahMy first Sg Tahan kelah (tor tambroides). In the background was my fishing guide (from Golden Mahseer Sdn Bhd), who was very helpful.

It is strictly catch and release for kelah fishing in Sg Tahan. For proper fish welfare, use a knotless landing net to minimise removal of mucus from its scales. The mucus plays a protective role for the fish.

Place the fish on a smooth mat, failing that find a smooth surface. DO NOT let the fish trash about. Restrain gently.

Unhook and then take your photos. Hold the fish close to the ground. In case it jumps out of your hold, it will not drop from some height.

To release, put the fish in the water facing upstream so that water will pass through its gills. Do not let go until it swims away on its own.

From landing to release, it should take you no more than 2 minutes. The shorter the time, the better. I know, I have been practising catch and release for more than 25 years.
